Strawberries Make Kids Dance

If anyone said strawberries don't give you energy, guess again.

This past Saturday, Bekah and I took the kids to the Strawberry Festival at Barrie Hill Farms (barriehillfarms.com).  We had been planning it since last weekend when we were there buying rhubarb and berries, and noticed the sign about the upcoming festival.

It was raining in the morning, and at first we were a little discouraged, but decided to pack up the umbrellas and head on out.

We stopped at a thrift shop on the way to give the kids an "indoor yard sale", and were pleased that the rain stopped while we were there.

By the time we arrived at the farm, it was wet, but not raining.  And because there was hay laid in the fields, picking was not at all uncomfortable.  And sad for the farm (truly, I felt bad) was that we were one of only a couple dozen families at the event due to the morning's weather, but nice for us as there were no lineups, no waiting, and it was easy to keep the kids happy.

There was a Celtic duo playing for the entire time we were there (if anyone knows who they were, please tweet me), and the kids decided it would be a fun way to wear off some of their energy from the berries they had eaten.

Our little dancers  :)

I hope the event was still a success for the farm, even in spite of the low turnout and rain.  It was a really nice, family-centered festival, and we'll definitely go again.  Looking forward to the upcoming raspberry harvest, too.

A little gaming nostalgia

Written by Robbie Ferguson, on May 21, 2010

On this week's episode of Category5, we looked at a little bit of gaming nostalgia, and as it turns out, Bekah and I both played a lot of the same games as kids.  We immediately installed the old DOS games CD to her Ubuntu Linux computer, and decided to play some good ol' Jill of the Jungle.

Man, does that ever bring back memories!

I'm seriously sitting here on the laptop cheering her on, and even caught myself yelling "Jump now!" at one point - LOL.

PS - to extend my geekiness, while you don't see it in the video, I actually have Bekah's screen up on the TV, so I'm watching it on the 27" screen.

We were doing really well, but as we approach level 10+, it's really starting to get tricky.

They really don't make games like they used to.  This is GREAT!

It seemed suiting that today, on the eve of the 30th birthday of Pacman, we'd be sitting here playing some games from when we were kids.

Next up? Space Quest 1.

My herb garden is doing well.

Written by Robbie Ferguson, on May 22, 2010

If you follow me on Twitter, you may or may not remember when Bekah, the kids and myself planted our seeds on March 27.  I decided to do my herbs from seed this year, because year after year, I find the stores just don't carry all the grown herbs that I want, plus it's usually fairly late when they are finally available.

I had tried store-bought plants in past years, but they usually don't do too well.  It could be the soil, the seeds, or maybe the people at the store just don't give the young plants the same care I do, so they often end up wilting and dying, or you spend the whole summer fighting to keep the herbs healthy.

This year, I picked up some "mini greenhouses", as we affectionately named them (the plastic kits that have six little soil pockets and a clear plastic lid), and bought a handful of organic seeds.

To make it fun for the kids, and to save us some cash when Bekah was ready to plant some flowers, I also got some flora seeds (a great assortment), and the kids planted those in their mini greenhouses and have watched them grow into vibrant greenery.  They have yet to flower, but it's still early, and they're young plants.

I took Tali to a thrift shop which uses the money they raise to buy Bibles for Missionaries.  Ironically, that's kinda like the name of the store!  "Bibles for Missions".  I guess they don't want you to be unclear about where your money is going - haha!  So, in that store, they had a great assortment of wicker and wooven baskets, and I grabbed perhaps a half-dozen of them to do some transplanting.  The bill came to something like $2.30, and I felt a little like... you know... how many Bibles am I really helping buy here?  But alas, it was a great bargain, and we'll support the mission in other ways.

Some fresh, healthy soil, basket liners, and a green thumb later, my herbs were transplanted into a sharp looking basket in our kitchen window.  The greenery adorning the breakfast table is really something to behold.

Robbie's Herb Basket - May 22, 2010

Here's to a magnificent summer with fresh ingredients.  What I can't grow myself, I'll get from local, ethical farmers.  Our organic beef farmer in Lyndsey, Ontario is fattening up our summer barbecue meat at this very moment, and I'm looking forward to some good, farm fresh eats all summer long.

Another thing I'm excited about is doing the bi-weekly farm tour (with stops at yard sales along the way).  From free range chicken to farm fresh free range eggs, honey, maple syrup, produce and more, Simcoe County really is a magnificent place to live for the health conscious, ethical eater.

And boy, oh boy, my sweet basil leaves are going to make some lovely fresh pasta sauces this summer.  With local, vine-ripe organic tomatoes, of course.

My YouTube Channel: RobbieSings4U
RobbieSings4u is, for the most part, my outlet for singing Opera music. I originally started it as a way to record some songs that "my mom would like", and then I realized it really was something I needed to do for myself more than anyone else. The realist in me says I'll "never be a professional vocalist", so this gives me at least a chance to demonstrate my singing to a small audience. And who knows, maybe one day a scout will hear me sing and ask me to come to the stage.
